A simple working definition of rhythm can be where notes of varying lengths are grouped together into patterns. Some define rhythm as a pattern of beats.

Rhythm exists in everyday life. in everything we do there is rhythm, our heart beats with a rhythm, we walk in rhythm, we talk in rhythm, we operate in our daily job with rhythm.
Learning to distinguish rhythm is pretty easy. Below is a video that depicts and defines rhythm in everyday life.." there is no movement without rhythm"

After viewing this video what examples can you think about in your everyday life that would be rhythmic. As we notice in the video their everyday routine is filled with rhythm, from preparing food, to working in the field to the workshop to playing drums.
For an assignment (homework) use your phone to record rhythm in action in your everyday life. Bring it to class on next Thursday 1st October 2015

To depict rhythm notes are used, these notes have a value, a value that is further defined in time, it is measured using a numerical value (a number).
In music we have a lot of signs and symbols, note symbols are just one of them so for example semibreve, minim, crotchet, quaver, semiquaver. Or the alternative names being Whole note, half note, quarter note, eight note, sixteenth note.
Look at the table below, by now we should be familiar with these note symbols (since form 1 we have been talking about these). The table outlines the note value system, as you can see in the last column the value of the note value is divided in half as you go down the column, this is the measurement system that was spoken about earlier, this measurement is referred to as BEATS (or number of beats).
Additionally we see the column that is labelled REST, a rest is defined as a period of silence, for each note symbol there is a related rest called by the same name, so for example: Semibreve or whole note REST, Minim or half note REST etc.
Each REST lasts as long as its relative note or in other words has the same value as its relative note, just in SILENCE, so for example a semibreve or whole note rest is 4 BEATS OF SILENCE and so on and so on.

Going back to the video posted earlier it is clear that with movement there is rhythm, or as it states, there is no movement with out rhythm... in the early part of the video with the three women and the mortar and pestle, their repeated movement creates a sound, which is rhythmic in nature, it is constant and repetitive.
The sound created can be depicted musically using the above notes so for example the beats based on the timing (meter) can be grouped together in 3 as 3/4 time signature or in 2 as 6/8 time signature and can be notated in music as follows:

Based on the video we can safely say that since there is no movement without rhythm... the women and the small child hammering the mortar and pestle created a rhythm. We are able to depict rhythm using notes where, a musician can recreate that same sound by accurately following the notation.
Now, one can imply that, suppose there is movement and we hear no sound? To aid this I suggest that we imagine a sound for movement... if somebody walks, imagine it for each step a sound is heard, from this a rhythmic pattern can be ascertained. If someone who does karate goes through their routine and for every stroke or hit or movement we attach sound to every hit or step or stomp etc we can create rhythmic musical notation that can be recreated by a musician anytime.
In the video below look at the movement of the dancers, notice how the move on each beat, notice how they dance to the rhythm.
OBSERVE the MOVEMENT,
OBSERVE the RHYTHM,
LISTEN to the music,
LOOK at how the two are combined

Your activity for next session on Thursday 8th October 2015
Choose your favourite song and using your camera on your phone video tape yourself doing movement to your favourite song.
You can also use what is also available to you at home so for example
sticks, spoons, pots, pans, bowls, cups etc.
So basically the idea is to play your favourite song and go through the motions using what is available to you and create your own movement, use the video example i posted to help with your ideas.
THIS IS FOR MARKS!!!!!!
